UN Human Rights Expresses Shock Over Killings During Gen-Z Protest in Nepal

“We are shocked by the killings and injury of protesters today and urge a prompt and transparent investigation.”

Kathmandu: The United Nations Human Rights Office has expressed grave concern over the deaths and injuries reported during protests led by youth groups in Nepal, calling for a prompt and transparent investigation into the incidents.

In a statement issued on Monday, UN Human Rights said:

“#Nepal: We are shocked by the killings and injury of protesters today and urge a prompt and transparent investigation.

We have received several deeply worrying allegations of unnecessary or disproportionate use of force by security forces during protests organized by youth groups demonstrating against corruption and the recent Government ban on social media platforms.

We call on the authorities to respect and ensure the rights of peaceful assembly and freedom of expression.

All security forces must comply with the basic principles on the use of force and firearms by law enforcement officials.

Nepal enjoys a lively democracy and active civic space, and dialogue is the best means to address young people’s concerns. We urge reconsideration of measures to regulate social media to ensure they comply with Nepal’s human rights obligations.”

The rare public statement comes amid growing unrest in Kathmandu and other major cities, where thousands of young people have taken to the streets under the banner of the “Gen-Z” protest movement. The demonstrations, sparked by widespread frustration over corruption and a controversial government ban on social media platforms, have intensified in recent days.

Clashes between protesters and security forces have left several dead and many injured, according to local reports. Human rights groups within Nepal have also raised alarm about the alleged use of excessive force.

The UN’s call adds to mounting international pressure on the Nepali government to ensure accountability and uphold democratic freedoms.
