Kathmandu: Amid economic pressures, political uncertainty and declining business confidence, nearly 150 business leaders and private-sector bodies gathered in Kathmandu for a discussion on responsible and ethical business practices. The event was organized by UNDP’s Business and Human Rights project, supported by Switzerland.
Participants reflected on the concerns raised by Gen Z during recent protests and discussed how ethical responsibility can help rebuild trust and support a more resilient economy. Speakers noted that while damaged infrastructure can be rebuilt, restoring confidence in the private sector is far more difficult once the spirit of enterprise is shaken.
Addressing the programme, Minister for Industries, Commerce and Supplies Anil Shah said the government and private sector must work together to create an environment where businesses can grow, while also managing social risks through strong compliance and responsible conduct.
Finance Minister Rameshore Khanal added that the private sector must examine its own governance standards, noting that young people have clearly demanded greater transparency and accountability.
Key messages from the event highlighted that protecting human rights is essential to business resilience, responsibility must accompany rights, and acknowledging one’s role in the problem is the first step toward meaningful solutions.
