Kathmandu: UNDP Nepal, in partnership with Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City, has implemented a Green Transition Portfolio to promote sustainable, circular, and resilient urban development.
The portfolio integrates initiatives on waste circularity, nature-based solutions, green skills development, and inclusive governance, aiming to create green jobs while strengthening local institutions.
A learning workshop held this week provided a platform for collective reflection on early outcomes, documentation of lessons learned, identification of gaps, and refinement of pathways to scale, replicate, and integrate successful initiatives into policy and practice.
Addressing the event, Mayor of Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City Gopal Hamal said that collaboration under UNDP’s Green Transition Portfolio is helping make Dhangadhi a more sustainable city. He highlighted the introduction of upcycling as a key initiative supporting green job creation and sustainable waste management, adding that training representatives from 84 local levels on circular and green economy practices has positioned Dhangadhi as a pilot model for both the province and Nepal.

UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Julien Chevillard noted that the portfolio is supporting Dhangadhi through interventions including e-waste management, green restoration, green skills development, and energy-efficient buildings.
UNDP Representative Chevillard further mentioned that the workshop aimed to review impacts and make adjustments to improve effectiveness and efficiency, while appreciating the mayor’s leadership in fostering collaboration and showcasing Dhangadhi as a model for other cities.
UNDP and Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City, together with local communities, youth, women, and the private sector, are jointly accelerating a green transition that supports people, planet, and prosperity.
