WTM 2025: Nepal Reaffirms Commitment to Responsible and Sustainable Tourism

Kathmandu: Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) Chief Executive Officer Deepak Raj Joshi has reaffirmed Nepal’s strong commitment to responsible and sustainable tourism development.

Speaking at a discussion session titled “Sustainable Shift: Transforming Tourism through a Circular Economy” during the World Travel Market (WTM) 2025 held at ExCeL London, CEO Joshi highlighted Nepal’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainability in tourism.

He explained how Nepal is advancing sustainable tourism through community participation, environmental responsibility, and economic inclusion, particularly in mountain and rural areas. “Nepal has now moved beyond superficial ‘green’ initiatives and is focusing on systemic change, balancing environmental protection, local empowerment, and business sustainability,” Joshi said.

The session, organized by Trove Tourism Development, brought together tourism experts from around the world to discuss how the global tourism industry can adopt a circular economy approach, reusing resources, reducing waste, promoting low-carbon transport, and ensuring local participation.

Discussions also focused on topics such as low-carbon mobility, community engagement in policymaking, infrastructure and investment challenges in emerging markets, and the social and economic benefits of sustainable tourism.

The session concluded with a shared call for the global tourism sector to move beyond symbolic “green” programs and drive tangible, measurable transformation toward sustainability.
