Himalayan Rim Film Exhibition Showcases Digital Innovation at Tribhuvan University

Kathmandu: The Himalayan Rim Regional Film Exhibition commenced at Tribhuvan University on December 16, highlighting the convergence of civilisational exchange and technological innovation through cinema and digital creativity.

Held under the theme “Civilizational Mutual Learning, Technological Innovation,” the exhibition features animated film screenings, craft workshops, cultural and creative displays, and interactive cinematic dialogues. The opening session began with an AI-generated promotional short film, followed by the screening of The Spirit of the Mountains, a full-process animated short created using AIGC (AI-Generated Content) technology.

Inspired by Quanxing Tuo a traditional Chinese intangible cultural heritage technique of full-form rubbing the film demonstrated how artificial intelligence can be seamlessly integrated with traditional artistic practices. Following the screening, director Pang Jia joined the audience via video link to showcase the AI-driven scene generation process in real time, while producer Junyan Huang engaged in an interactive discussion with students and faculty members.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Dr Kundan Aryal, Head of the Central Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Tribhuvan University, said the department has been steadily transitioning toward digital media in recent years. He also announced plans to introduce a film studies course in the near future, emphasising that platforms such as this exhibition play a vital role in strengthening people-to-people ties between Nepal and China.

The exhibition continued in the afternoon with a screening of the animated feature The Legend of Hei 2, which attracted a large student audience. Utilising dynamic storyboard pre-visualisation technology, the film presented a heart-warming narrative centred on harmonious coexistence between humans and “demons.”

The event concluded with a lively Blind Box Interaction session, during which students enthusiastically participated in quizzes and activities to win limited-edition film merchandise.

Organised by the 1905 Movie Network, the Himalayan Rim Regional Film Exhibition aims to promote China-Nepal cultural exchange and establish a strong “digital bridge” among young people. Following its run at Tribhuvan University, the exhibition will travel to Kathmandu University and Lumbini Buddhist University. According to the organisers, the exhibition will conclude on December 21.
