Kathmandu: Everest, the latest book by author and guide Ashok Silwal, has been launched at the International Mountain Museum (IMM) in Pokhara.
Carrying the subtitle An Unfinished Story, the book was unveiled in the IMM courtyard, set beneath Machhapuchhre and framed by the silent presence of three of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks. The launch took place in the presence of colleagues and guests, with IMM Executive Director Nirmala Kumari Neupane officiating the release.
“According to our records, visitors from 105 countries, mountain lovers, admirers of Himalayan life, and seekers of Himalayan culture, have walked through this museum,” Neupane said, welcoming both the author and his book while highlighting the institution’s significance. “To launch Everest here, in this Himalayan sanctuary, by Silwal, who also serves as a Langtang Ambassador, is a remarkable milestone. Congratulations to the author. Your contribution to Nepal’s tourism will always be remembered.”
“This is the Mountain Museum launch of Everest,” Silwal shared during the event. “Your warmth, your respect, and your words have created a moment so heartfelt that even someone who prefers silence cannot remain silent.” Expressing gratitude for the support shown toward him and his work, he donated several copies to the museum’s library. “Allowing Everest to become part of this Himalayan pilgrimage site is a blessing,” he added with a smile.
Before Pokhara, Everest was first presented in Kyanjin, the final village of the Langtang region, situated at nearly 4,000 meters above sea level. “Though the book takes Sagarmatha, the world’s highest peak, as its theme, the journey within it remains grounded, woven with experience, reflection, and a touch of the spiritual,” Silwal said.
Everest is Silwal’s fifth book. His previous works include Kalam, an examination of journalism; Lekhakh Duniya, which explores the inner world of literature; Sri Lanka Smriti, a collection of travel memories; and Appo Deepo Bhava, a spiritual book centered on Mount Kailash.
Silwal, a tourism trainer, also works as an independent journalist and documentary filmmaker.
