SAARC Secretary Sarwar Attends the 70th Session of the CSW

Kathmandu: Ambassador Golam Sarwar, Secretary General of SAARC, attends the 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in UN Headquarters, New York, March 9 to March 19.

SAARC Secretary Sarwar addressed the 70th session of the CSW at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on March 17. In his remarks, he reaffirms South Asia’s steadfast commitment to advancing gender equality, underscoring its role as a cornerstone of sustainable peace and inclusive development.

Speaking on the theme “Ensuring and strengthening access to justice for all women and girls,” the Secretary General emphasized that gender equality is not merely a goal but the foundation of South Asia’s collective progress. “South Asia, home to nearly one-quarter of humanity, views gender equality as the bedrock of sustainable peace.”

Over the past decades, SAARC Member States have moved beyond rhetoric to establish transformative frameworks. Key milestones include the 2002 Convention against Trafficking and the 2004 Social Charter, which safeguard girls from exploitation and ensure women’s participation in leadership.
