Kathmandu: As Nepal prepares to conclude its tenure as the Chair of the Group of Least Developed Countries, H.E. Ambassador Lok Bahadur Thapa, Permanent Representative of Nepal to the UN, convened the Group’s final Ambassadorial Meeting under Nepal’s chairmanship on September 2.
The Group elected its new Chair and Bureau for a three-year term beginning September 2026. Ambassador Thapa congratulated the incoming Chair and Bureau and wished them a successful tenure.
He thanked the Group for entrusting Nepal with its leadership during a turbulent and challenging period, and reflected on the progress achieved during Nepal’s leadership, challenges ahead and priorities requiring continued collective action. He also briefed the group on the damage and destruction caused by devastating floods in Nepal highlighting the need for global action for addressing climate change impacts.
He also expressed deep appreciation to H.E. Rabab Fatima,Under Secretary-General and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, and her team for their steadfast support to Nepal’s chairmanship in advancing the interests and aspirations of LDCs.
During the meeting, Permanent Representatives and representatives conveyed heartfelt condolences for the tragic loss of lives, livelihoods and properties caused by the devastating floods in Nepal. They also commended Nepal for its dedicated, principled and tireless leadership of the Group.
