Kathmandu: More than 400 participants came together to celebrate the Nagdhunga Tunnel Fun Run & Walk 2026, a unique pre-opening event jointly organized by the Department of Road (DOR) and JICA.
Ahead of the official opening of the tunnel, runners, walkers, students, government officials, Japanese volunteers, media representatives, and community members had the rare opportunity to experience Nepal’s newest tunnel infrastructure.
The event was more than just a run and walk—it was a celebration of a decade of collaboration between Nepal and Japan, culminating in a project that will improve connectivity, enhance road safety, reduce travel time, and contribute to Nepal’s development.
A special highlight was the participation of legendary marathon runner Mr. Baikuntha Manandhar, whose presence inspired participants and added significance to this historic occasion.
As participants enjoyed this once-in-a-lifetime experience, they also learned about tunnel safety, emergency systems, and responsible tunnel usage.
The soon to be opened Nagdhunga Tunnel stands as a symbol of friendship, trust, and cooperation between Nepal and Japan—and today, hundreds of people became part of its history.
