Kathmandu: The President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Lok Bahadur Thapa, addressed the Ambassadorial-level ECOSOC retreat convened by the United Nations Foundation and the President of ECOSOC on January 23.
Reflecting on global changes since 1946, ECOSOC President Thapa noted on social media that while the world has transformed in many ways, the enduring need for multilateralism to address sustainable development challenges remains constant.
“The world has transformed in myriad ways since 1946. What has remained constant is the enduring need for multilateralism to address sustainable development challenges. But we are undoubtedly at a perilous moment for multilateralism—and indeed for the United Nations,” said ECOSOC President Thapa in a post on social media.
He further stressed that as a principal organ of the United Nations, ECOSOC carries far-reaching responsibilities, including policy guidance, coordination, review, and analysis across economic, social, environmental, and related fields.
