Kathmandu: Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai has stressed that Nepal’s upcoming graduation from the Least Developed Country (LDC) category should be a “proud journey toward a prosperous society and sustainable development,” rather than a period of turbulence.
Speaking in Doha, Qatar, on the final day of the High-Level Meeting on forging global partnerships for sustainable and resilient LDC graduation, Rai underscored the need for an incentives-based framework to ensure a smooth transition. He called for scaled-up integrated support, including the iGRAD Facility, dedicated graduation support programmes, and enhanced financing.
The meeting concluded with the adoption of the “Doha Agreed Statement on Global Partnerships for Sustainable and Resilient Graduation of LDCs.” The document, introduced by Rai in his capacity as Chair of the LDC Group, was endorsed by all participating countries and organizations.
On the sidelines, the Foreign Secretary met with Deodat Maharaj, Managing Director of the UN Technology Bank for LDCs, to discuss potential areas of cooperation to support Nepal’s smooth, resilient and irreversible graduation.
