Kathmandu: Germany provided comprehensive assistance to Nepal to support communities affected by the recent floods and to contribute to recovery efforts. This support addresses both immediate humanitarian needs and the longer-term implications of the disaster, combining humanitarian assistance, development cooperation and support channeled through European and multilateral mechanisms.
Emergency Assistance
Germany provided emergency assistance worth more than EUR 500,000. The supplies are being delivered through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism at the request from the Government of Nepal. The delivery includes kitchen sets, tarpaulins, mosquito nets, equipment for drinking-water supply and camp beds. The relief materials were provided by the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) which is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office, as well as by the German Life Saving Association (DLRG) and the German Federal State of Thuringia.
Humanitarian Assistance
Germany also provided EUR 200,000 in direct support to two civil society organizations addressing urgent humanitarian needs. One project will focus on the health and well-being of pregnant women, new mothers and newborns affected by the disaster. Activities will include the provision of emergency supplies, maintaining access to essential health services and strengthening infection prevention.
The second project will form part of the European Union’s humanitarian response through the Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO). Through the project, Germany will support creating income opportunities for disaster-affected households, supporting infrastructure recovery and improving conditions in displacement camps.
Development Assistance
Recognizing that the disaster’s consequences will extend beyond the immediate emergency, Germany has mobilized an additional EUR 7.35 million through its development cooperation. The funds are provided by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), Germany’s federal enterprise for international cooperation.
Building on its longstanding partnership with the Government of Nepal, GIZ will provide assistance in the areas of health and energy, with a focus on maintaining access to essential health services, energy and water supply. Germany also aims to support Nepal’s longer-term efforts to strengthen climate- and disaster-resilient infrastructure and to improve resilience to future natural disasters.
Military Support
Germany is a major contributor to the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) and to the European Union. Following the disaster, CERF has mobilized USD 2.5 million in humanitarian funding, while the European Union has mobilized EUR 2.5 million.
Strong ties between the people of Germany and Nepal
Germany said they recognize and highly value the important contribution of German civil society organizations, which are already providing assistance on the ground, often supported by donations from thousands of people in Germany who feel a strong connection to Nepal. The bonds between the people of the two countries are manifold and deeply rooted.
In line with the principle of localization, German civil society organizations work closely with local partners and in coordination with the Government of Nepal, helping to ensure that assistance reaches those who need it most.
