Government Seeks Break from Past Practices in Infrastructure Development: Finance Minister Wagle

Kathmandu: Finance Minister Dr Swarnim Wagle has said this year’s Nepal Infrastructure Summit aims to break away from past practices and usher in a new approach to infrastructure development through major policy and legal reforms, the state-run RSS reported.

Speaking at a press conference in Kathmandu on Thursday, November 5, Finance Minister Wagle said the government was working to establish a distinct identity for the event by focusing on transformative reforms in the infrastructure and investment sectors.

“We are for radical restructuring to drive policy and legal reforms within the infrastructure and investment sectors,” RSS quoted Minister Wagle as saying.

Stating that the government was pursuing comprehensive reforms in various areas, including the economy, legal system, resource management, peace and justice, Wagle said infrastructure development and policy reforms would serve as key drivers of the country’s overall progress.

Similarly, Minister for Infrastructure Development Sunil Lamsal reportedly said the government was preparing to introduce significant policy and legal reforms in the infrastructure and investment sectors.

Addressing the press conference jointly organised by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, the Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI) and the Federation of Contractors’ Associations of Nepal (FCAN), Minister Lamsal said the government was working to resolve complex legal and procedural hurdles ahead of the summit.

He said the government planned to present the policy and legal reforms undertaken in the infrastructure sector during the summit and urged development partners and donor agencies to invest in Nepal, assuring them of an increasingly investment-friendly environment.

Alongside policy and legal reforms, the government also aims to address delays in project implementation and eliminate irregularities in infrastructure development, he added.
