Japan Extends Congratulations on Nepal’s Constitution Day

Kathmandu: Japan has congratulated Nepal on the occasion of Constitution Day 2025, with His Majesty the Emperor of Japan sending a message to President Ramchandra Paudel and Ambassador Maeda Toru extending greetings on behalf of the Japanese government.

“On behalf of the government of Japan, I would also like to express my heartfelt congratulations on the tenth anniversary of the Constitution, with my respect for the unwavering efforts of the people of Nepal for the last decade to uphold democracy, freedom, inclusivity, and social justice under the Constitution,” said Ambassador Maeda, underpining the strong bilateral ties between the two countries.

Reflecting on recent events in Nepal, Ambassador Maeda expressed deep condolences for the loss of lives and injuries during youth-led protests against the social media ban and corruption, which culminated in a change of government last week.

“I pray for peace to the departed souls and extend my deep condolences to the bereaved families. I also express my sympathy to those who suffered from injuries and damages,” added Ambassador Maeda, further stressing Japan’s hope for a peaceful and democratic transition at the earliest possible time.

“At the same time, it was very encouraging to witness the strong commitments of many people of Nepal to protect the Constitution even during the turmoil,” Maeda noted, drawing parallels with Japan’s own post-1947 constitutional journey built on democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.

“I believe that democratic Constitutions and their norms and principles have become an important foundation of the Japan-Nepal relations, in addition to the historical people-to-people ties that date back to the 19th century, as well as the longstanding and consistent development cooperation since 1969.”

Highlighting the long-standing ties between the two nations, the Ambassador recalled that September also marks the establishment of Japan-Nepal diplomatic relations on September 1, 1956. With the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties approaching next year, he expressed hope for further strengthening of friendship and cooperation based on shared values and common interests.
