Kathmandu: H.E. Maeda Toru, Ambassador of Japan to Nepal, and Padam Raj Shrestha, Executive Director of Livelihood Education and Development Society Nepal (LEADS Nepal), signed a grant contract at the Embassy of Japan in Kathmandu for “The Project for the Construction of a Ginger and Timur Processing Center in Myagdi District” on September 7.
The Embassy stated that the project is funded through the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects (GGP) of the Government of Japan, with a grant of USD 43,175 (approximately NPR 6.6 million). Implemented by LEADS Nepal, the project will benefit a women farmers’ cooperative in Beni Municipality, Myagdi District, comprising around 600 women farmers facing socio-economic challenges. LEADS Nepal has been actively supporting local communities and improving rural livelihoods in the region.
They further emphasized that Myagdi is known for producing high-quality timur and ginger, important sources of income for local farmers. And the project will support the construction and renovation of processing facilities and the installation of modern equipment. These improvements are expected to enhance processing efficiency and product quality, enabling farmers to produce higher-value products, increase their incomes, and strengthen their livelihoods.
The Embassy concluded that they hope that this initiative will contribute to sustainable rural development and women’s economic empowerment in Myagdi. As 2026 marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Nepal, the Embassy also hopes that this cooperation will further strengthen the longstanding friendship between the two countries.
