Nepal Focuses on Reviving Tourism Sector Amid Challenges

Kathmandu: Stakeholders have held discussions on reviving Nepal’s tourism sector, a cornerstone of the national economy, with the active participation of the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation and coordination by the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB).

At a meeting with tourism-related organizations on Monday, it was concluded that despite challenges caused by damage to infrastructure during the recent Gen-Z Movement, Nepal’s tourism is steadily moving toward recovery.

Tourism Secretary and NTB Chairman Hari Prasad Mainali said the government is committed to removing policy obstacles and strengthening cooperation with the private sector. “We are working to improve Nepal’s image and send a strong message that Nepal is a safe destination through the maximum use of information technology,” he said.

Mainali also instructed agencies to prioritize the safe movement of tourists and stressed that Nepal is regaining global confidence with political stability.

NTB Vice Chairman Ram Prasad Sapkota suggested launching new tourism packages and mobilizing embassies, NRNA, and other networks to reassure travelers. Pokhara NTB Chief Maniram Lamichhane added that trekking routes and adventure destinations remain safe, and facilitation measures are in place for visitors.

Hotel Association of Nepal (HAN) President Binayak Shah assured that despite business losses, hospitality standards would not be compromised. “Adventure tourism has not been significantly affected, and arrivals are increasing,” he said.

Nepal Association of Tour and Travel Agents (NATA) President Kumarmani Thapaliya stressed the importance of long-term strategies, while NTB member Rishiram Bhandari noted that recovery efforts must be accelerated.

Other representatives, including PATA General Secretary Narendra Dev Bhatta, TAAN President Sagar Pandey, and Kailash Tour Operators Association President Bimal Naharki, highlighted the need to ensure safety, promote Nepal internationally, and facilitate the Kailash pilgrimage.

NTB CEO Deepak Raj Joshi emphasized that Nepal’s tourism has recovered from past crises and called for confidence-driven promotion of tourist destinations. Discussions with hotel associations also confirmed that hoteliers are prepared to welcome guests if state support is ensured.

Government bodies, NTB, and private sector representatives collectively expressed commitment to turning recent challenges into opportunities and establishing Nepal as a safe, attractive, and accessible destination.
