Nepal Highlights Food Insecurity Challenges Facing LDCs at UN Meeting

Kathmandu: At the opening session of the Expert Group Meeting on the Food Stockholding Mechanism for Least Developed Countries (LDCs), LDC Chair and Nepal’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Lok Bahadur Thapa highlighted the structural and increasingly severe food insecurity faced by LDCs.

He said food insecurity in LDCs has been driven and exacerbated by multiple national and global crises, underscoring the urgency of collective action. Ambassador Thapa emphasized the need for the timely, immediate, and credible operationalization of the Food Stockholding Mechanism, as committed under the Doha Programme of Action.

He further stressed that the mechanism must be country-driven and context-specific, provide predictable emergency support, complement existing systems, and contribute to the transformation of sustainable food systems in LDCs.
