Kathmandu: Nepali mountaineer Purnima Shrestha, who has set a new record for the most ascents of Mount Everest in a single season by a woman, received a certificate from the Guinness World Records.
According to the official certificate issued by Guinness World Records, Shrestha successfully climbed the world’s highest peak three times within one climbing season. She reached the summit from the south side of Everest on May 12, May 19, and May 25, 2024.
Sharing the achievement on the occasion of International Women’s Day on March 8, 2026, Shrestha said the recognition has inspired her to continue pushing boundaries in mountaineering. She stated that climbing Everest three times within 13 days is a rare accomplishment, particularly in a field where the participation of women remains limited due to social and physical challenges.
“I overcame those challenges and this recognition has inspired me a lot. I hope it will help promote gender equality,” she said, urging people to break gender stereotypes in different sectors and work towards building a more equal society.
Shrestha also expressed her commitment to continue climbing in future seasons and thanked her family, friends, and expedition partners for their support throughout the journey. She extended special gratitude to her expedition partner 8K Expeditions and Lakpa Mountaineering, as well as guides Phura Temba Sherpa, Karma Gyalji Sherpa, and Pemba Basherpa.
Her achievement is expected to inspire more women in Nepal and around the world to pursue mountaineering and other challenging fields.
