Public Affairs Chief Harker Successfully Summits Mount Everest

Kathmandu: The US Embassy Nepal’s Public Affairs Chief, Mike Harker, successfully summited Mount Everest on May 20. He became the first serving American Foreign Service Officer to scale the world’s highest peak. The Embassy stated that this feat is a proud moment for Freedom 250, the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence, serving as a reminder of the American spirit of drive, grit, and exploration.

Undertaken in his personal capacity, Chief Harker’s expedition is the culmination of a 20-year journey that began during a 2006 trek to Annapurna Base Camp, which first sparked Mike’s lifelong bond with Nepal.

This successful summit attempt underscored nearly eight decades of US-Nepal friendship and highlighted how sustainable adventure tourism builds global connections while fueling local economies.

The Embassy further emphasized the climb spotlights the bravery, world-class expertise, and dedication of Nepal’s Sherpa community and said that they are the true backbone of Himalayan mountaineering, and this achievement would be impossible without them. The Embassy said protecting Everest is vital to ensuring this iconic global treasure can continue to support Himalayan communities and inspire adventurers for generations to come.
