Third International Buddhist Conference to Be Held in Lumbini

Lumbini: The Third International Buddhist Conference will be held in Lumbini on April 29 and 30, coinciding with Baisakh Purnima (Buddha Jayanti).

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Lumbini Development Trust (LDT) held today. The conference aims to promote Lumbini at the international level and boost tourist arrivals, according to LDT Member Secretary Deepak Shrestha.

The meeting, chaired by Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation and LDT Chairman Anil Kumar Sinha, formed the main organizing committee for the event. A 10-member main ceremony committee has also been formed under the coordination of Dr. Lharkyal Lama (Khenpo Chhimechiring), Vice Chairman of the Trust.

The government has allocated Rs 30 million in the current fiscal year for organizing the conference. The event, originally planned for November, was postponed due to political and structural changes and has now been rescheduled to coincide with the 2,570th Buddha Jayanti.

Dr. Lama said the conference aims to promote world peace through Buddhist philosophy and spread the values of kindness, compassion, and global brotherhood. He expressed confidence that Buddhist scholars, spiritual leaders, and distinguished personalities from more than 60 countries would attend.

The two-day conference will feature discussions and paper presentations on topics including Lumbini as the birthplace of Buddha, Kapilbastu and Buddhist heritage sites, the environmental condition of the Lumbini area, world Buddhist heritage, and Buddhist education and culture.

The Lumbini Development Trust said previous international Buddhist conferences have made significant contributions to Nepal’s religious, cultural, and tourism sectors.
