Kathmandu: The United Nations General Assembly has officially proclaimed April 15 as International Wellness Day, adopting a resolution introduced by Lok Bahadur Thapa, Nepal’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations on March 10.
The resolution, initiated by the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations, highlights the growing global recognition of wellness as a holistic concept that includes physical, mental, emotional, social, cultural, and ecological well-being. The initiative marks a significant diplomatic achievement for Nepal, as it is the first time the country has led the proclamation of an international day at the UN.

Presenting the resolution during the plenary session of the General Assembly, Ambassador Thapa emphasized that the world is currently facing complex and interconnected health challenges. He noted that multiple global crises have intensified pressures on health systems worldwide.
“We are facing mounting health challenges, shaped and sharpened by the interplay of numerous and overlapping global crises and challenges. Our health systems are being tested like never before,” Thapa said.
According to the resolution, promoting holistic wellness can play a key role in addressing the rising burden of non-communicable diseases, including mental health issues. It also stresses that wellness-oriented policies can strengthen community resilience, encourage socio-economic development through the wellness sector, and ensure inclusive access to well-being for people across the globe.

Ambassador Thapa further highlighted the importance of preventive health strategies and lifestyle-based approaches that focus on people-centered development and sustainability.
The resolution received strong international support, being co-sponsored by 40 UN member states and backed by broader membership within the UN system.
The newly declared International Wellness Day is expected to raise global awareness about the importance of balanced well-being and encourage governments, institutions, and communities to adopt integrated approaches to health and development.
Diplomatic sources noted that the initiative also reflects Nepal’s growing engagement in global health and sustainable development diplomacy. Prior to the adoption of the resolution, the Permanent Mission of Nepal led a series of transparent and inclusive consultations with UN delegations to finalize the text of the resolution through consensus.
With the proclamation, April 15 will now serve as an annual global observance aimed at promoting physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being as essential pillars of sustainable development and human dignity.
The Permanent Mission of Nepal expressed appreciation to all UN member states and sponsoring countries for their constructive support that helped ensure the successful adoption of the resolution.
