Pradip Paudel, Minister for Health and Population of Nepal, stated that universal health coverage must be a global priority. Addressing the 58th Session of the Commission on Population and Development, New York, 7-11 April 2025, Minister Paudel said ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all isn’t an option but a necessity.
Speaking on the theme of ‘Ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all ages’, he expressed that we must make concerted and collective efforts to strengthen health systems, bridge gaps in access, and guarantee essential services for everyone, everywhere. He added, “Universal health coverage must be a global priority. We should address the issue of unequal access to essential health services that perpetuate suffering and deepen inequality.” The Minister also informed that the Government of Nepal has accorded due priority to ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all.
“The Constitution of Nepal ensures human rights, women’s rights, gender equality, and safe motherhood as fundamental rights, serving as the foundation for health and well-being across the lifespan. We have enacted progressive legislation and policies that uphold the rights of women, girls, and young people,” the minister stated. “We have established comprehensive frameworks to advance safe motherhood and reproductive health, strengthen gender equality, support youth empowerment, and improve healthcare systems. Nepal has prioritised universal health coverage to reduce financial barriers, ensuring equitable access to healthcare, especially for women, rural populations, and marginalised groups.”
He also shared that Nepal has given due emphasis on preventive approaches to health as a core part of its national health strategy, with due focus on primary healthcare, immunisation, community-based interventions, and health education and awareness. Moreover, he added that Nepal has established a legal base for the right to free and accessible abortion law.
“We are committed to ensuring universal access to sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights. Nepal has taken measures to address harmful social and gender norms and provide survivor-centered response services,” he said.
