Dashain Celebrates Across the Country

Nepal recently immersed in the vibrant celebrations of Dashain, the country’s most significant Hindu festival, marked by family gatherings and blessings from elders.

The 15-day-long festival, which symbolizes the victory of good over evil, began this year with Ghatasthapana — the auspicious sowing of barley seeds in a sacred pot. This marked the beginning of worship of Goddess Durga, who is believed to have defeated the demon Mahishasura after a fierce nine-day battle.

The festival reached its peak on the tenth day, Vijaya Dashami, which fell on October 2 this year. On this day, elders placed tika (a mixture of rice, yogurt, and vermillion) and jamara (barley sprouts) on the foreheads of younger family members as a symbol of blessings for prosperity, long life, and success.

Public offices, schools, and businesses remained closed for several days, as many Nepalis traveled from the cities back to their villages to celebrate with family.

For many Nepalis, Dashain is more than just a religious festival — it is a time of renewal, forgiveness, and reconnection with family and heritage.
