International Day Against Illicit Trafficking of Cultural Property Marked Worldwide

Kathmandu: Countries across the globe are marking the International Day against Illicit Trafficking of Cultural Property, an observance aimed at raising awareness and preventing the theft and illegal trade of ancient sculptures, paintings, artifacts, historic sites, and other cultural treasures.

The United Nations declared this day an official international observance five years ago. UNESCO has emphasized the importance of protecting cultural heritage in historically rich nations such as Nepal, noting the need to safeguard ancient temples, sculptures, and monuments in cities like Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, and Lalitpur.

Nepal’s Department of Archaeology continues to play an active role in the conservation of cultural heritage. Experts stress that cultural property is more than historic objects, it represents a nation’s identity and history. They call on the public, authorities, and international partners to work together to ensure the protection and preservation of these invaluable assets.
