Kathmandu: The festivals of Rakshabandhan and Janai Purnima (Rishi Tarpani) were celebrated across Nepal today with sacred rituals and age-old traditions. On this full moon day of the month of Shravan, devotees bathed in rivers, lakes, and ponds from early morning before receiving the Yajnopavit (sacred thread) and Rakshasutra from priests.
According to Vedic belief, wearing the sanctified thread, blessed with mantras by the Guru Purohit, offers protection from negative influences. The tradition of Rakshabandhan is rooted in the ancient story of Guru Brihaspati, who prepared a protective thread for the gods against demon king Bali, a ritual still observed today with the recitation of sacred mantras.
Priests tie the Rakshasutra on the right wrist of devotees while chanting protective Vedic verses, continuing a practice that blends spiritual faith with cultural unity.
