Nepal and Russia established diplomatic relations on July 20, 1956, laying the foundation for a longstanding partnership characterized by mutual respect, cordiality, and cooperation. Over the decades, the relationship has been strengthened through high-level exchanges, development assistance, particularly in infrastructure and energy, and educational opportunities for Nepali students in Russia.

After the Soviet Union’s collapse, Nepal promptly recognized the Russian Federation, ensuring continuity in their diplomatic ties. Today, both countries maintain embassies in each other’s capitals, have abolished visa requirements for diplomatic and service passport holders, and continue to consult regularly on bilateral and international issues, with Russia expressing ongoing support for Nepal’s development efforts.
