Nepal and South Africa established diplomatic relations on July 28, 1994, shortly after the end of apartheid and the formation of South Africa’s Government of National Unity under President Nelson Mandela. Nepal had actively opposed apartheid through its role in the United Nations, including serving as Vice Chair of the UN Special Committee against Apartheid for 25 years.
Since establishing ties, the bilateral relationship has been warm, cordial, and marked by mutual trust, cooperation, and shared values such as peace, democracy, and human rights. Nepal initially managed its relations with South Africa through its embassy in Cairo until opening a resident embassy in Pretoria in 2010. High-level visits and diplomatic exchanges have further strengthened political, economic, and commercial cooperation between the two countries, both of which are active members of the Non-Aligned Movement and the United Nations.
