Kathmandu: Ministry of Forests and Environment has announced the launch of the 20-year Sagarmatha Tree Plantation Mega Campaign, following the call made during the Sagarmatha Sambaad held in Kathmandu from May 16–18, 2025.
A ministerial decision taken on June 23 confirmed that the nationwide campaign will begin this year and continue annually from June 29 to July 31 until 2045. During this period, saplings will be planted on suitable land and properly maintained. The campaign responds to urgent concerns raised during the Sagarmatha Sambaad, particularly the rapid melting of Himalayan snow, which poses serious threats to both mountain ecosystems and coastal areas downstream.
Minister for Forests and Environment, Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri, stated that this campaign will be a significant step toward protecting the Himalayas and addressing the impacts of climate change. The campaign is set to be inaugurated on Asar 14 (June 28), observed as National Tree Plantation Day in Nepal.
Under the initiative, saplings of fruit-bearing and native tree species will be planted across the country. The Ministry emphasized that this effort supports Nepal’s international commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2045, and the campaign is expected to make a meaningful contribution toward that goal.
To ensure the campaign’s success, the Ministry has urged the active participation of all sectors, including federal ministries and agencies, provincial governments, local governments, the Federation of Community Forest Users, private and partnership forests, the private sector, civil society, and the media.
The campaign is named ‘Sagarmatha Tree Plantation’ in honor of the Sagarmatha Sambaad, which inspired its launch as a national initiative to combat climate change and promote environmental resilience.
