Kathmandu: Lawmaker Sumnima Udas has been elected unopposed as the Chair of the International Relations and Tourism Committee of the Federal Parliament.
Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Udas brings extensive international experience to the role. A former correspondent for CNN, she worked in New Delhi from 2001 to 2017, reporting on politics, economics, social issues, and environmental developments. During her tenure, she covered major events including the 2012 Delhi gang rape and India’s 2014 general elections.
She was also part of a CNN team that received the Cine Golden Eagle Award in 2012 for reporting on slavery in Indian villages.
In 2014, Udas was honoured with the “Journalist of the Year” award at the Women’s Empowerment Journalism Awards for her coverage of gender issues.
Udas holds a journalism degree from Lee University and a master’s degree from University of Oxford. She is also the founder and executive director of the Lumbini Museum in Nepal.
Beyond journalism, she has publicly expressed views on a range of political and social issues, including opposition to the Citizens Amendment Act.
