KATHMANDU: Nepali Ambassador to Japan, Dr. Durga Bahadur Subedi, addressed a seminar on building a multicultural society in Japan as the special guest. The event was jointly organized by the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF) and the Citizens Network for Global Activities.
Ambassador Subedi underscored the importance of fostering an inclusive society that supports the integration of foreign residents, including the growing Nepali community in Japan. He appreciated ongoing efforts to assist new arrivals, promote mutual understanding, and ensure access to information and services.
The seminar featured discussions among diplomats, government officials, foreign community leaders, and NGO representatives, who shared experiences and explored future strategies to build a more inclusive and cohesive Japanese society.
The seminar was part of a broader initiative by SPF, which has made “the realization of an inclusive society” a core focus.
As Japan faces demographic challenges, including a declining birthrate, an aging population, and labor shortages, foreign residents now exceed 3.5 million, with over 2.3 million foreign workers. In response, Japan launched a 2022 roadmap promoting harmonious coexistence with foreign nationals, emphasizing accessible information and basic Japanese language support.
Since 2023, SPF has conducted orientation programs for new arrivals from Nepal, the Philippines, and Uzbekistan in collaboration with embassies, Japan’s Immigration Services Agency, and local NGOs.
