PM Modi Expresses Solidarity with Nepal in First Call with Interim PM Karki

Indian Prime Minister Modi congratulated PM Karki on her “historic appointment as the first female Prime Minister of Nepal.”

Kathmandu: Prime Minister of Nepal’s Interim Government, Sushila Karki, held a telephone conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, September 18, marking their first official interaction since her appointment.

According to Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Indian Prime Minister Modi congratulated PM Karki on her “historic appointment as the first female Prime Minister of Nepal” and extended heartfelt condolences over the loss of lives during the recent youth movement. He also conveyed warm wishes to Nepal on the occasion of its upcoming National Day (Constitution Day) and expressed India’s solidarity with Nepal during this pivotal moment.

MoFA further noted, “Prime Minister Karki conveyed her heartfelt greetings and best wishes to Prime Minister Modi on his 75th birthday and appreciated the Indian Prime Minister for his message of solidarity.”

PM Karki also underscored that, responding to the call of the recent Gen-Z movement, holding elections would remain the top priority of her government, with a commitment to accountable, responsive, and corruption-free governance.

“Rt. Hon. Prime Minister Karki further expressed that the historical and close relationship between Nepal and India will continue to be strengthened by multifaceted people-to-people ties,” the release stated.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs and the Prime Minister’s Office confirmed the conversation in their press statement, reiterating that Modi congratulated Karki, offered condolences for lives lost in recent protests, and reaffirmed India’s readiness to work closely with Nepal to restore peace, stability, and progress.

In a social media post, Indian PM Modi said, “Had a warm conversation with Mrs. Sushila Karki, Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal.”

“Conveyed heartfelt condolences on the recent tragic loss of lives and reaffirmed India’s steadfast support for her efforts to restore peace and stability. Also, I extended warm greetings to her and the people of Nepal on their National Day tomorrow,” he added.

Both sides stated that the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthen bilateral cooperation and remain in close contact.
