UNDP–Japan Project Strengthens First-Responder Capacity in Jajarkot and Rukum West

Kathmandu: The United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) Jajarkot Earthquake Recovery Project, supported by the Government of Japan, organized a series of intensive search and rescue orientation programmes across five rural and municipal areas in Jajarkot and Rukum West districts.

The initiative aimed to strengthen local disaster preparedness by enhancing the skills of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) volunteers and police personnel as first responders.

Through realistic simulations of earthquakes, floods and landslides, and household fires, participants received hands-on training in essential search and rescue principles, practical emergency response techniques, safe methods to rescue injured persons, and critical life-saving skills, including CPR.

Moreover, the programme emphasizes swift and effective action during emergencies, contributing to stronger local response capacity and reinforcing community resilience against future disasters.
