United Nations Passes Resolution to Extend Preparation Period for LDC Graduation to Nepal and Bangladesh

Kathmandu: The United Nations General Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution to extend the necessary preparation period for the process of upgrading Nepal and Bangladesh from the list of Least Developed Countries (LDCs) until November 24, 2029.

The decision was taken by the 81st General Assembly sitting at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York.

The Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations in New York has informed that it has been decided to increase the preparation period set for the upgrading of Nepal and Bangladesh by unanimously passing Resolution No. 81/L.8 in the General Assembly.

With this decision, Nepal has gained additional time to carry out the necessary structural and institutional reforms more effectively before being upgraded from the list of least developed countries.

Nepal has said that it will use this period for production capacity enhancement, institutional strengthening and economic and social transformation. In addition, the smooth transition strategy (Smooth Transition Strategy) prepared to ensure a smooth transition after upgrading will emphasize the effective implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Doha Action Plan.

It is believed that the additional time will help Nepal to achieve the goal of upgrading from the list of least developed countries in a smooth, sustainable and irreversible manner. The Nepali Mission has expressed its thanks for the continuous cooperation, solidarity and support of Nepal to all member states of the United Nations for the decision.
