Kathmandu: World Seagrass Day will be marked on March 1, 2026, under the theme “Seagrasses Enrich Ocean Biodiversity and Fisheries,” underscoring the crucial role of seagrass ecosystems in supporting marine life and sustaining fisheries.
This year’s theme highlights the importance of protecting and restoring seagrass habitats to enhance ocean biodiversity, strengthen food security and promote sustainable livelihoods for coastal communities.
The national event, organized by the Ministry of Environment, will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at the Coastal Environmental Centre in Kalpitiya. The programme will bring together school children, fisher communities, representatives of government and non-governmental organizations, civil society groups and youth organizations. It aims to raise awareness and encourage collective action to ensure a resilient marine future for generations to come.
Seagrasses are marine flowering plants found along the coastlines of 159 countries, with around 72 species identified globally. Recognizing their ecological and economic importance, the United Nations General Assembly declared March 1 as World Seagrass Day in 2022 following a resolution sponsored by Sri Lanka and co-sponsored by 24 countries.
These underwater ecosystems provide critical habitats for a wide range of marine species and contribute significantly to climate resilience, carbon sequestration and coastal livelihoods. This year’s observance will further emphasize conservation efforts, community engagement and the sustainable management of seagrass ecosystems worldwide.
