Diplomatic Missions in Kathmandu Celebrate Teej Festival

Kathmandu: Diplomatic missions in Kathmandu celebrated Teej, the festival of women. Various missions shared pictures of celebrations held at their embassies, where colleagues marked the occasion with their women staff. Heads of missions and ambassadors also joined in the festivities.

The U.K. Embassy posted a video featuring its women staff, while the U.S. Embassy in Nepal shared photos of staff dancing with Ambassador Dean R. Thompson. The Australian Ambassador to Nepal, Leann Johnston, also shared a photo with women staff on the embassy premises, extending greetings on the occasion.

The Chinese Embassy, along with others in Kathmandu, likewise conveyed greetings for the Teej festival.

Teej, often known as the festival of women, is celebrated primarily by Hindu women in Nepal with fasting, prayers, and vibrant cultural expressions. It is dedicated to the goddess Parvati and her union with Lord Shiva, symbolizing love, devotion, and marital harmony. Women dress in red saris, adorn themselves with jewelry, and gather to sing and dance, while many observe a day-long fast praying for the well-being of their husbands and families.

In recent years, Teej has also evolved into a celebration of sisterhood and women’s empowerment, extending beyond its traditional religious roots.
