Farmers in Gundu Busy Harvesting Makhmali Flowers Ahead of Tihar

Bhaktapur: With the festival of lights, Tihar, fast approaching, farmers in Gundu, Suryabinayak Municipality–7, Bhaktapur, are immersed in harvesting and preparing garlands of vibrant Makhamali flowers (Gomphrena globosa).

Gundu, known as a pocket area for velvet flower cultivation, has turned into a sea of purple and magenta hues as nearly every field is covered with these festive blooms. Farmers are seen busily picking and tying garlands in their homes, preparing for the surge in demand that accompanies the festival.

The locally grown Makhamali flowers are widely supplied to markets across the Kathmandu Valley and nearby districts. Cultivation of the flower has been a long-standing tradition in Bhaktapur for over two decades.

Traders visit Gundu each year to purchase freshly harvested flowers directly from the fields, ensuring a steady market for the farmers. The local municipality has also begun encouraging and supporting flower cultivation as part of its agricultural promotion initiatives.

Velvet flowers hold a unique cultural and emotional significance during Tihar, symbolizing love and longevity. On Bhai Tika, sisters traditionally adorn their brothers with velvet flower garlands after applying the sacred tika, celebrating the cherished bond between siblings.
