Kathmandu: The 80th United Nations Day (UN Day 2025) was marked with a special ceremony on November 6 at the Shree Birendra Peace Operations Training Centre in Panchkhal. The event celebrated Nepal’s long-standing commitment to global peacekeeping under the UN banner.
Chief of Army Staff General Ashok Raj Sigdel paid tribute to the dedication and professionalism of Nepali peacekeepers serving across various UN missions worldwide since 1958. He reaffirmed the Nepali Army’s unwavering commitment to peace and stability, even while operating in challenging and volatile environments and amid the UN’s ongoing financial constraints.
The ceremony was attended by the Secretary of Defence, representatives from the Nepal Police, Armed Police Force Nepal, and the National Investigation Department, along with local elected officials, Ministry of Foreign Affairs representatives, military attachés of friendly nations, media personnel, and officers and troops of the Nepali Army. During the special ceremony, troops of the Nepali Army demonstrated their role and work at the peacekeeping missions.
Nepal began contributing to UN peacekeeping in 1958 and has since become the world’s top troop-contributing nation, as well as a leading provider of women peacekeepers. Currently, 5,819 Nepali Army personnel are serving in 10 UN missions across the globe. Over the decades, 74 Nepali soldiers have laid down their lives and 75 have been injured in the line of duty while working to uphold international peace and security.
The observance of UN Day served as a tribute to Nepal’s proud peacekeeping legacy and a reminder of the courage, sacrifice, and professionalism that define the nation’s service under the UN flag. The UN Day was on October 24. But the Nepali Army celebrated later on November 6.
