Kathmandu: Lok Bahadur Thapa, Permanent Representative of Nepal to the UN, spoke at the Interactive Dialogue on engagement with the UN80 Initiative at the Annual Session 2026 of the Executive Board of UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS.
According to the UN, the UN80 Initiative is about building a simpler, more effective and more coherent UN System that delivers better for people and planet – amid shrinking resources and rising needs.
As the Least Developed Country (LDC) Chair, Ambassador Thapa called for reform processes that are Member State-driven, transparent, inclusive and evidence-based. He stressed the need to safeguard development mandates, strengthen country-level delivery, support national ownership, and ensure that reforms enhance the effective implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in LDCs.
He also emphasized the importance of preserving LDC-specific mandates and sought greater clarity on the rationale, expected benefits and operational implications of proposed institutional reforms, including their potential impact on development programming, country presence and delivery at the country level.
