Empowering Students through Recycling and Upcycling School Program

Kathmandu:  What began as a pilot in 15 schools has rapidly transformed into a city-wide movement. With 18 new schools joining this year, the Recycling and Upcycling (RU) School Program now empowers students across 33 schools to champion sustainable waste management.

Selected from more than 40 applicants, teachers and RU Club advisors from the new schools recently came together for an orientation where they learned about sustainable waste management and engaged in hands-on upcycling activities.

Recognizing this grassroots impact, Pokhara Metropolitan City has officially integrated the expansion of RU and Green Clubs into its 2083/84 Policy and local curriculum.

During the orientation, Hem Prasad Acharya, Chief of Education Division at Pokhara Metropolitan City, noted “Behaviour change takes time. We started this in partnership with KOICA. ICC and UNDP, and now it has become part of our policy and program. It may take time, but change is undeniable when students are meaningfully engaged in such initiatives.”
