FAO Nepal Comes Together for a LGBTQIA+ Learning Sensitization Workshop

Kathmandu: Fostering a workplace and an agrifood system where everyone truly belongs required moving beyond simple representation to ensure that every individual felt safe, respected, and empowered to contribute without fear of discrimination. FAO Nepal stated that as they into July, they came together for a LGBTQIA+ Learning Sensitization Workshop to deepen our understanding of sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, sex characteristics (SOGIESC), and active ally ship.

As FAO Representative for Bhutan and Nepal, Ken Shimizu emphasized that inclusion must go beyond representation and ensure that all individuals feel safe, respected, and able to contribute without fear of discrimination. Shimizu reaffirmed FAO Nepal’s commitment to fostering an inclusive workplace and supporting the meaningful mainstreaming of champions already contributing across agri-food systems. The session reflected this commitment, bringing together Honorable Bhumika Shrestha, Nepal’s first transgender Member of Parliament, and partners including the Blue Diamond Society, Rainbow Disability Nepal, the Family Planning Association of Nepal, and Campaign for Change, whose lived experiences offered valuable insights into intersectional diversity and inclusion.

True agri-food systems transformation cannot leave anyone behind. Building resilient, sustainable, and equitable food systems requires recognizing the diverse realities of everyone who grows, produces, and depends on them.

FAO Nepal remains committed to working alongside the Government of Nepal, civil society, and partners to advance inclusive development that upholds dignity for all.
