Nepal Calls for Stronger UN Support for LDCs at IAHWG Meeting

Kathmandu: Speaking on behalf of the Group of Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Nepal’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Gyan Bahadur Magar addressed the IAHWG Meeting on Mandate Implementation Review, underscoring the need to safeguard development commitments for the most vulnerable nations.

Representing the Nepal Mission to the United Nations, he stressed that any reform initiative within the UN system must strengthen, not dilute, the organization’s capacity to deliver on development goals, particularly for countries that are furthest behind.

He highlighted that mandates should be adequately resourced in line with established budgetary practices to ensure effective implementation. He further emphasized that streamlining mandates must be guided by a transparent, Member State-led process and should not weaken LDC-specific mechanisms.

The Deputy Permanent Representative also underlined that UN system-wide coordination is indispensable for the effective execution of broader mandates, including the United Nations’s Development Programme of Action (DPoA) and other dedicated Programmes of Action for LDCs.

Nepal reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the collective interests of LDCs and ensuring that reform processes reinforce, rather than undermine, development priorities.
