Kathmandu: With support from the EU Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid funded PRATIBADDHA project, the Meteorological forecasting Division, Department of Hydrology and Meteorology/Nepal Weather Forecast successfully organized a national-level workshop on Impact-Based Forecasting for Rainfall-Induced Landslides on 19 June 2026 in Kathmandu.
The workshop brought together representatives from government agencies, academic institutions, humanitarian organizations, and technical experts to discuss the current status, challenges, and future direction of landslide early warning systems in Nepal.
Participants were updated on ongoing landslide monitoring, forecasting, and early warning initiatives being implemented by key institutions, including the DHM, the Department of Mines and Geology, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, and the Government of Nepal, Water Resources and Energy Research Centre, Godawari.
A key outcome of the workshop was the renewed commitment to strengthen coordination among stakeholders and to revitalize the Landslide Technical Working Group (LTWG) as a platform for collaboration and knowledge sharing. The discussions highlighted the need to integrate hazard forecasts with exposure and risk information to deliver actionable warnings that can support timely preparedness and early action at all levels.
The workshop marked an important milestone in advancing impact-based forecasting for rainfall-induced landslides and strengthening Nepal’s capacity to reduce disaster risk through improved forecasting, coordination, and early warning services.
