SathSathai Foundation and Kathmandu University Launch National Coal Exit Program to Achieve Clean Energy Future

The Nepal Coal Exit Program sets key targets, including drafting a national coal exit policy by 2028.

KATHMANDU: On the occasion of World Environment Day 2025, the SathSathai Foundation and Kathmandu University jointly launched the “Nepal Coal Exit Program: Responsive Use of Coal and a Just Transition.” This national initiative aims to phase out coal use in Nepal by 2045 and promote a shift to renewable energy.

Coal is one of the most polluting fossil fuels, contributing to carbon emissions and glacier melt in the Himalayas. Despite Nepal’s significant hydropower potential, the country still relies heavily on imported coal, particularly in the brick and cement industries. In 2022, coal imports exceeded USD 130 million.

The Nepal Coal Exit Program sets key targets, including drafting a national coal exit policy by 2028, shutting down coal-based plants by 2030, and achieving 100% renewable energy capacity by 2050. The program also emphasizes a just transition to protect workers and industries affected by the coal phase-out.

“This is not just an energy transition, it is a moral commitment to future generations. A coal-free Nepal by 2045 is possible if we act now, together,” said Prajeeta Karki, Chairperson of SathSathai Foundation.

The program will be rolled out in three phases from 2025 to 2040, focusing on the responsive use of coal, using coal only when necessary during the transition period.

“We are proud to partner on this critical initiative that aligns academic research with Nepal’s national climate goals,” said the team leader of the Green Hydrogen Lab at Kathmandu University.
