Kathmandu: During her mission to Nepal, UN Assistant Secretary General and UN Women Deputy Executive Director, Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda, engaged with the leadership of the Election Commission of Nepal, including Officiating Chief Election Commissioner, Ram Prasad Bhandari.
The discussions reflected on the successful conduct of the 2026 House of Representatives elections, and the importance of continued collaboration to strengthen inclusive, credible, and transparent electoral systems. The dialogue also highlighted joint efforts of UN Women with the UNDP Nepal to enhance technical capacity, voter education, and inclusive participation.
UN Women Nepal stated that Nepal has made notable progress in women’s political representation, with women holding 34.91% of parliamentary seats. At the same time, persistent gaps remain, particularly in women’s participation in First-Past-the-Post elections, access to campaign financing, and the need to address violence against women in politics, both online and offline.
So, the discussion also focused on ensuring inclusive participation across democratic processes are critical to building systems that work for all.
