UN Women Deputy ED Gumbonzvanda Meets with Feminist Leaders in Nepal

Kathmandu: Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda, UN Assistant Secretary-General and UN Women Deputy Executive Director, met with feminist leaders, youth activists, and private sector changemakers, bringing together diverse voices shaping a more equal and resilient future.

Discussions with women’s rights organizations and Gen Z leaders highlighted both progress and persistent barriers in women’s political participation — from historic gains in representation to ongoing challenges including patriarchal norms, unequal access to resources, and violence in politics. The conversations underscored the importance of collective action, intergenerational leadership, and inclusive movements in shaping Nepal’s democratic future.

Engaging with business leaders, entrepreneurs, and financial actors alongside UN Resident Coordinator Lila Pieters Yahia, discussions emphasized women’s economic leadership as central to Nepal’s growth. It became increasingly clear that women are ready to lead and innovate — bringing talent, ideas, and solutions — and that the focus must now shift to removing the structural barriers limiting their full participation and potential.

Across all engagements, a shared message emerged: investing in women and girls in all their diversity is essential to Nepal’s inclusive and sustainable development, particularly as the country approaches LDC graduation. UN Women remains committed to strengthening partnerships across government, civil society, women rights organizations, the private sector, and the UN system to ensure women are recognized, resourced, and empowered to lead.
