FAO, Government of Nepal Sign ReFaME Agreement for Ecosystem Restoration

Kathmandu: The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Nepal and the Government of Nepal signed the Operational Partner Agreement for the Restoration of Forests and Mountain Ecosystems (ReFaME) project in Far West Nepal on October 30.

The agreement was jointly signed by Bishal Ghimire, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Forests and Environment (MoFE), Ken Shimizu, FAO Representative for Bhutan and Nepal, and Dirgha Narayan Koirala, Province Secretary of the Ministry of Industry, Tourism, Forest and Environment (MoITFE), in the presence of Dr. Rajendra Prasad Mishra, Secretary at MoFE.

Moreover, the partnership marks a shared commitment to restoring fragile mountain ecosystems, enhancing biodiversity, and improving local livelihoods through inclusive and gender-responsive approaches. Targeting three districts: Baitadi, Darchula, and Doti, the project will cover ten local governments and span an area of 1,845 square kilometres, ranging from 500 to 3,000 meters in altitude.

FAO Nepal, together with the Government of Nepal and provincial counterparts, aims to ensure that the ReFaME project delivers tangible benefits to communities across Sudurpaschim Province while contributing to Nepal’s climate and biodiversity goals.
