Ministry of Agriculture launches the CRAFT Nepal project

Kathmandu: The Government of Nepal, Ministry of Agriculture, Forests, and Environment (MoAFE), and the Department of Agriculture, in collaboration with FAO Nepal, launched the CRAFT Nepal project on June 26. The project was done to transform rice-based farming systems in central Nepal through climate-resilient value chains and nature-based solutions.

“CRAFT Nepal represents a scalable pathway to strengthen livelihoods, enhance food security, and build resilience,” said Ken Shimizu, FAO Representative for Bhutan and Nepal. He also reaffirmes FAO’s commitment to supporting climate-resilient and climate-smart inclusive agrifood systems.

With agriculture employing around 55% of the population and climate risks intensifying, the initiative will reach over 162,800 people, bring 10,000 hectares under resilient practices, and strengthen the capacity of 7,400 stakeholders, driving more sustainable and food-secure agrifood systems.

The USD 8.9 million project is being implemented by the Government of Nepal, with supervisory support from FAO Nepal and financial support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
