Kathmandu: H.E. Lok bahadur Thapa, UN ECOSOC President, co-chaired the Joint Meeting of ECOSOC and the Peacebuilding Commission on “ From Risk to Resilience: Advancing Social Cohesion through Job Creation in Peacebuilding Contexts.”
President Thapa said, “We must identify practical ways to strengthen the link between economic opportunity, social cohesion and peacebuilding, particularly by expanding opportunities for young people and women.”
He further stated the people living in fragile and conflict-affected settings are not simply asking for assistance. He emphasized, “They are asking for opportunity: opportunity to work, opportunity to contribute, and opportunity to build a better future for themselves, their families and their communities. Helping to create those opportunities is one of the most powerful contributions we can make to sustaining peace. Because when people have a stake in the future, they also have a stake in peace.”
