Kathmandu: The Government of Japan has announced a grant assistance of Rs 2.6 billion for the Emergency Rehabilitation of Sindhuli Road Affected by floods.
The Exchange of Notes for the grant was signed by Maeda Toru, Ambassador of Japan to Nepal, and Ghanshyam Upadhyaya, Secretary at the Ministry of Finance, in the presence of Finance Minister Rameshore Prasad Khanal and Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal.
The 160-kilometer Sindhuli Road, connecting the mid and eastern Terai with Kathmandu, was originally built with Japanese assistance worth 25.8 billion yen between 1995 and 2015, significantly contributing to Nepal’s economic development.
However, heavy floods in September 2024 severely damaged over 10 kilometers of the road, disrupting trade, transport, and local livelihoods.
Japan’s new grant aims to restore and rehabilitate the road, ensuring it continues to serve as an essential transport route and a symbol of friendship between Japan and Nepal. The Embassy of Japan expressed confidence that the project will support Nepal’s sustainable economic growth and further strengthen bilateral relations between the two nations.
